Their batteries sometimes offer slightly less cranking power, albeit with slightly more capacity than other batteries of the same BCI size. What can we learn from this battery comparison?
Optima is the most powerful, in terms of starting/cranking power, with a huge 720CCA.
However, it also has the lowest capacity, 11 Ah less than Weize and Mighty Max’s size-35 offerings, and fully 14Ah less than ACDelco’s.
The ACDelco size-35 battery has a quite significant 100CCA less cranking power than the Weize and Mighty Max batteries and 170CCA less than the Optima Redtop 35 battery.

The offerings from each company are very similar for size-48 batteries, with the exception of Optima, who go big on power for their size-48 model, packing in 40CCA more starting power, and 2Ah greater capacity.
That additional power and endurance makes it quite a lot heavier than the other brands’ batteries, 8 to 8.5lb, in fact. That extra weight could, over the course of the year, add a pretty penny onto your fuel costs.
You’ll have to weigh up if you appreciate the premium quality of Optima’s AGM batteries, and that additional power, enough to accept that.

You’re hopefully starting to see a pattern, and it gives you an idea of the priorities of each maker for their batteries.
Optima are focused on packing in as much power as possible, and that sometimes means their batteries are heavier than the competition.
Brand History & Status
Weize
Weize are a California-based automotive and deep-cycle battery and automotive equipment maker.
They sprang up in 2020, and have warehouses in California and Georgia.
They rose to prominence originally with their popular LiFePO4 batteries, which quickly became one of the top sellers on Amazon, at a time when that market was going crazy, due to significant advancements in lithium cells and a price war among sellers.
Most companies with this type of start (making LiFePO4 batteries) are Chinese companies, who create a US company and brand, to better sell their products in this market.
But it’s also certainly possible that Weize have American ownership, and linked with a Chinese manufacturer to sell LiFePO4 batteries. And then developed their product range to include automotive batteries and other automotive equipment.
If you Google search Weize story, you’ll find their brand story page’s Google listing title still says “Focus on Lithium Iron Phosphate battery”. That perhaps was their focus in the initial stages of their company development, but now they offer a wide range of automotive products.
ACDelco
ACDelco, you probably know very well. This is an American company with over 100 years of history. They’re headquartered in Warren, Michigan.
They’re owned by General Motors.
They were originally formed as United Motors Corporation in 1916 by William C. Durant, who actually founded General Motors.
Various name changes followed before they became ACDelco, and they’ve become one of the most popular and recognisable names for automotive batteries since then.
They offer a very wide range of OEM and aftermarket replacement parts, including car batteries.
Mighty Max
Mighty Max are a US-based manufacturer of various battery types.
They are based out of Edison, NJ.
A lot of their earlier product offerings were in the solar industry, and a significant portion of their product sales are motorcycle batteries. They also make batteries for powersport purposes, consumer electronics, and deep-cycle LiFePO4 batteries.
Their success with motorcycle batteries has allowed them to enter the competitive 12V automotive battery market, and their batteries have become very popular in the last few years.
Optima
Let’s check out Optima, another very highly recognisable name in the automotive world.
Optima are headquartered in Glendale, Wisconsin, founded in 1972.
They’re owned by Clarios, one of the biggest makers of low-voltage automotive technologies in the world. This is another huge company, also headquartered in Wisconsin.
Their batteries are manufactured in Monterrey, Mexico.
Optima are a company that specialises in batteries, with a long-held reputation for the premium quality of their AGM technology.
Their marine batteries are equally highly regarded for their quality; they are famed for having some of the highest performing dual purpose batteries, providing both significant cranking power and excellent sustained power delivery.

What does this data tell us?
This data is very much what we expected. ACDelco and Optima both have a big name in the auto battery industry, their brand social media followings are therefore as large as you’d expect.
They’re also Googled far more often than the two less established brands.
Optima are the clear winners, at least in these metrics, for brand reputation. Compared to ACDelco, they have almost exactly double the instagram following, 30k more Facebook followers, and well over double the number of brand Google searches per month.
Let’s be clear. No-one’s going to make their battery choice based on the maker’s social media following. But it’s still valuable information to get a clearer picture of a brand’s standing and reputation.
Examining the number of brand searches on Google is a helpful one for another reason.
Particularly for an established brand, if many thousands of people are searching for that brand, it means they’ve either used their products before and were happy enough to purchase from that company again. Or they’ve positive things about the brand from other people or other sources, and want to check them out to potentially buy from them.
Of course, for newer brands, it’s more likely to be the case that people are hearing about the brand for the first time, and want to Google it to find information about the company.
We’ve talked about the company history and status. And we analysed how many people are specifically searching for their products.
Let’s combine those two criteria, and find out the search history for the brands over time.

The two more established brands have a very consistent search history.
The only surprise we received was that ACDelco searches have spiked to their highest ever level in the last few months.
How to choose your auto battery?
Okay, so now you’ve got the data. But now you’re perhaps wondering how to compare the battery brands and make your choice??
What are the most important criteria you should be using to make your choice about the battery you need?
Firstly, and most obviously, check the size. (You’d be surprised how many greenhorns aren’t even aware that not any battery will fit in your car, as it’s “roughly the right size”!).
So, check the size. Make sure it’s right for your vehicle.
How to evaluate CCA and Ah?
Those are the two key numbers to be aware of.
We’ll get into the more technical definitions but as a very general, simple way to think of them, you can say CCA is a measure of starting power, and capacity (Ah) is a measure of how much energy the battery can store.
Little more detail needed?
Sure. CCA stands for Cold Cranking Amps.
It’s the Amps recorded for a battery for a 30-second period, while maintaining at least 7.2V, at a temperature of 0°F (-18°C).
Even if you don’t live in a cold temperature, this value is still important for you. Because, it’s a way to measure how well a battery can provide starting power (which we measure in Amps) when the voltage of the battery is relatively low.
A low voltage is something that happens to your car battery sooner or later, regardless of your climate. It can happen if you have too many short trips, which doesn’t give the alternator time to charge the battery fully. Or if you don’t use the battery for a while. Or when the battery starts to age. Or you leave the lights on overnight, accidentally. And so on…
